I don’t see how this relates to aeternity directly.
Indirectly it exists because you are using erlang, it is the Erlang Port Mapper Daemon
as far as I can tell you don’t need it to have external access from the machine-
According to Erlang -- epmd it is called by erl automatically and sets everything in the server needed to run erlang, it also serves as a dns of sorts for erlang programs.
You would be better off having it but blocking access to it from the outside.
